White Washed
Me and mike have a never ending debate going on in our house. To paint the trim, or to not paint the trim? Now, to be clear, I’m in the painting camp. I always have loved the look of crisp white trim framing doorways and the floors. Our turn of the 19th century house has a whole lot of natural wood work- wide trim around all the doorways, floors and windows – that is unfortunately for me stained a rich mahogany.
I actually have come around a little bit and found an appreciation for the stained woodwork in certain parts of the house.. it adds a lot of character and keeps a lot of the early 1900′s integrity. The back part of our house is a totally different story – our bedrooms and bathroom are all off of a tiny corridor with no lighting, creating a small dark space. Add 4 doorways framed in dark wood…and its nearly a cave!
We finally came to the compromise that we would paint all of the trim in the back portion of the house white! I’m really excited to start working on this, but its also a little overwhelming.. and really where do you draw the line? Do you paint the trim, windows, and doors?? I came across a few photos, that made me realize the look of Mahogany doors and white trim is actually quite lovely – and I would love to be able to keep the original doors in the house.

It’s funny how passionate people can get when it comes to stained vs painted so I’m glad we came up with a solution that makes us both happy! (and hopefully after this I can convince Mike that we should paint ALL the trim in the house white!)
