One girl's love affair with all things beautiful

White Washed

Me and mike have a never ending debate going on in our house. To paint the trim, or to not paint the trim? Now, to be clear, I’m in the painting camp. I always have  loved the look of  crisp white trim framing doorways and the floors. Our turn of the 19th century house has a whole lot of natural wood work- wide trim around all the doorways, floors and windows – that is unfortunately for me  stained a rich mahogany.

I actually have come around a little bit and found an appreciation for the stained woodwork in certain parts of the house.. it adds a lot of character and keeps a lot of the early 1900′s integrity.  The back part of our house is a totally different story – our bedrooms and bathroom are all off of a tiny corridor with no lighting, creating a small dark space.  Add 4 doorways framed in dark wood…and its nearly a cave!

We finally came to the compromise that we would paint all of the trim in the back portion of the house white! I’m really excited to start working on this, but its also a little overwhelming.. and really where do you draw the line? Do you paint the trim, windows, and doors??  I came across a few photos, that made me realize the look of Mahogany doors and white trim is actually quite lovely – and I would love to be able to keep the original doors in the house.

It’s funny how passionate people can get when it comes to stained vs painted  so I’m glad we came up with a solution that makes us both happy! (and hopefully after this I can convince Mike that we should paint ALL the trim in the house white!)

The Windsor Chair

I am infinitely in love with Windsor Benches & Chairs.  I love the combination in the pictures below of traditional spindle chairs along side the more dramatic higher backed Windsor chairs.  The bench is what really captures me though.  I would love to (some day)  have a combination of the dramatic higher backed chairs, traditional spindle chairs and one beautiful Windsor bench, preferably painted in a lovely, punchy color.  Milky Blue perhaps? Ahh a girl can dream!

Scrumptious Sunday Dinner

Mike and I love too cook together, and Sunday Dinner is one of our favorite meals to make. Last night we decided to make chicken pot pie one of my favorites! (peas carrots and roasted chicken together under a blanket of puff pastry? sign me up!)  I recently purchased super adorable individual baking dishes from Crate & Barrel.  The Normandy Baker comes in several sizes, but the individual size is so darn cute I couldn’t resist!

The Individual chicken pot pies were wonderful, and on the healthy side for a meal in the comfort food category. Instead of creating a traditional flour butter cream and broth roux, We used Chicken broth and low fat condensed cream of chicken soup. The combination was wonderfully rich with just a percentage of the calories! No crust  went  inside the dish, just a piece of puff pastry  on top….a quick egg wash and a dusting of sea salt, fresh cracked pepper and dried thyme topped it off!

We were both licking the bowls!

Quick Kitchen Update

When we moved in to our house, it was obvious the sellers had recently repainted the outdated kitchen cabinets. Unfortunately for us, it looked like it was done hastily, and we ended up with solid wood cabinets masked beneath several gloopy layers of paint. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely would have ended up repainting them, and  I would have chose white as well…..but as the person who has to live with them everyday I would have been more painstaking with the layers of paint!

But I digress…in an effort to class up said lumpy cabinets, I thought some classic clam-shell style pulls would give them a quick breath of new life. I’ve really been seeing these type of pulls everywhere from Pottery barn to Home Depot these days, so when I found these ones at my local home improvement  store, I was psyched. The dark vintage bronze color went perfectly with the exisiting pulls & handles, so all I had to do was purchase 6 of the new guys and I was all set! At $6 bucks a pop, This under $40 dollar quick fix had a lot of bang for the buck!

Everyday Antiques

Browsing Antique stores is probably one of my favorite pastimes, unfortunately most of the time that’s just where it ends – browsing.  The things I end up falling in love with are always too expensive, and the things in my budget usually are not what I’m looking for (i.e. plaid lamps)  However – once in a while you find one of those perfect antique stores, that is a blend of  consignment and antique and you can actually afford more than one thing in the store!

I happened to stumble upon such a place a few summers back  in Boothbay Harbor Maine (one of my absolute favorite summer vacation spots!)  It was so lovely and perfect it was almost overwhelming! While this was probably the tiniest purchase I made, its still one of my absolute favorites….a vintage little tin bucket that I use to hold little bouquets of flowers. Its so sweet and simple and really dresses up whatever corner I stick it in!

I’m really looking forward to making quite a few flea market trips this summer, especially now that I have a whole house to fill up with junk! I mean, gorgeous antiques that I absolutely need!

First Time’s a Charm Right?

In August of 2009 I became a first time home owner, buying my first stand-alone-adorably-red ranch with my boyfreind Mike.  We bit the bullet and moved to the “suburbs” of boston after a long 7 years of being city dwellers. I use the term suburb lightly since we moved to Medford…which for all you non- new englanders… is approximately 7 miles from downtown Boston..panick attack relating to mom haircuts  and minivan’s  averted!   (See adorable-red-ranch below)

Let me tell you -  while i loved my roomates dearly the transition from apartment and roomate life  to living in my own home with Mike has been a wonderfully easy one.  Here’s the breakdown, First house, First live-in boyfreind, first puppy …2009 was certainly a year for firsts. And it’s certainly been charming to say the least!

One Fine Day

It’s never to late to rsvp to your own life right? So here I am…mathematically challenged accountant by day….girl in love with all things country chic by night (and weekends!).  I’m always telling my self that “some day” I’ll figure out away to get my life on the track I want it to actually be on -and today feels like as good a day as any other. Wish me Luck!
