Luck of the Irish

I’ve been busy this week preparing for my upcoming vacation to Killarney, Ireland which I am so excited for! We are leaving this Saturday and will be there for the entire week.  Killarney is a picturesque town in County Kerry and we are lucky enough to be staying in walking distance to the famous lakes and a very short trip from the adorable town center which boasts great shopping, restaurants  and of course pubs!

One of the thing’s I’m most excited about is that we aren’t staying in a  typical hotel but instead we are renting a vacation house since were traveling with Mike’s family. ( Yes – I am vacationing with over twenty of my boyfriend’s relatives – call me crazy!)

Here’s a peek at where we will be staying:

I am also thrilled about the fact that there is a fully functioning kitchen (would you look at that old farmhouse sink?!) It will be a nice treat – not to mention a break for our wallets- to make a few meals in.  Think anyone would judge me if I brought a bag of Starbucks beans for that coffee maker I spy on the counter?!

I will be away from my computer, work, internet and cell phone for eight whole days- I can hardly believe it!

An Outdoor State of Mind

As I’m sure you can all tell my brain is really stuck on vamping our outdoor space.  We found out the hard way during our house warming party that our pretty white wrought iron chairs really aren’t functional on our gravel patio. After a short period of time sitting in them they begin to sink through the gravel and in to the dirt below which really wasn’t very fun for any of our guests!  I’m think that something with a more linear bottom (as opposed to chairs with four thin legs) would solve this problem…plus…I’ve been dreaming of creating an outdoor sectional forever!

Pottery Barn always has drool worthy outdoor furniture, unfortunately it is WAY out of the budget…but it’s still oh so pretty to look at isn’t it?

This baby would set you back almost three thousand dollars! WAY too much. I am loving however, the way this set looks nestled away on a rustic pea gravel patio. Hmm, where have I seen one of those before??

Fortunately for us design loving cheapskates IKEA has a remarkably similar product known as their ARHOLMA line of mix and match pieces you can use to custom create a sectional.

The separates at IKEA will run you between $60.00 and $120.00, so while they are still a bit pricey for us, you could probably create something functional and beautiful for under $500.00.  Plus you could always add on to it one piece at a time.  I think this would look great nestled in to our little fire pit area don’t you think?

A Sneak Peak at the Backyard

I’ve been a very bad blogger lately and I hope you all will forgive me!  On the upside we got a lot done with our outdoor space the past few weeks… but as Paula Deen would say, the proof is in the pudding y’all, so let’s get right to some pictures!

Let me just remind you what we were originally working with. Our beloved mulch patio.

Now for the afters:

All in all, we’re loving the new pea gravel addition to our patio,  it’s so much more useful and just makes the entire patio feel so much bigger.  I’m especially loving the two distinct outdoor living areas – dining & lounging!

The white chairs were a wonderful steal from a recent antiquing trip to Essex MA (more on that some other time) and I really think they are quite at home out here! I’m considering spraying them a fun color but for now I think they’ll stay white.

It’s a work in progress though…things we still want include a nice big umbrella for our patio table, a new wooden fence, and more comfortable  seating for the new fire pit area.  I better start this wish list asap!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
