One girl's love affair with all things beautiful

New England Living

I might be a born and raised Jersey girl, but my heart is in New England. I love our charming coastal style and worn in beauty. And I love how our summers always seem to revolve around the sea. Just the way I like it.  One of my closest friends growing up was here visiting us last weekend and she managed to snap a few beautiful pictures while she was out whale watching.

I love this shot she got of the lobster men reeling in their traps . Thanks for the gorgeous photos Catherine!

Hope everyone is enjoying their Summer as much as we are!

Simply Summer

One my favorite hints of summer is that first fantastically fresh tomato you pick up at the grocery store.  Summer tomatoes just seem to be so much better then their winter counterparts.  The other night mike and I were in the market for a simple and easy weeknight meal and we happened to have a perfectly ripe heirloom tomato, fresh basil along with a ball of fresh mozzarella. I don’t know about you but that combination just screams home made pizza to me! I picked up a few slices of prosciutto to toss on top, and made a simple Caprese salad on the side.

Simple and fresh ingredients always seem to taste better when you do less! Even Bowser couldn’t resist!

(FYI – these pictures were pre-new camera!)

Back to Reality

I’m finally back in the real world, and boy let me tell you it was a hard transition. After leaving my last job and traveling to Ireland coupled with the start of my new job I have been nothing short of exhausted lately!  I forgot to mention before I left that I made a pretty significant purchase prior to my departure….. I bit the bullet and bought my self a new Canon Rebel DSLR Camera! My 25th Birthday is right around the corner after all, and every girl deserves an early birthday present or two right?   The best part is that I was able to play around with it while I was on Holiday!

Just a few of my favorites from the trip. Still can’t believe what a difference the Camera makes!

It’s high time I reconsult my to do list, I have quite a stock pile of projects around here that are being completely ignored! I swear – this weekend it’s back on the wagon!

Luck of the Irish

I’ve been busy this week preparing for my upcoming vacation to Killarney, Ireland which I am so excited for! We are leaving this Saturday and will be there for the entire week.  Killarney is a picturesque town in County Kerry and we are lucky enough to be staying in walking distance to the famous lakes and a very short trip from the adorable town center which boasts great shopping, restaurants  and of course pubs!

One of the thing’s I’m most excited about is that we aren’t staying in a  typical hotel but instead we are renting a vacation house since were traveling with Mike’s family. ( Yes – I am vacationing with over twenty of my boyfriend’s relatives – call me crazy!)

Here’s a peek at where we will be staying:

I am also thrilled about the fact that there is a fully functioning kitchen (would you look at that old farmhouse sink?!) It will be a nice treat – not to mention a break for our wallets- to make a few meals in.  Think anyone would judge me if I brought a bag of Starbucks beans for that coffee maker I spy on the counter?!

I will be away from my computer, work, internet and cell phone for eight whole days- I can hardly believe it!

A Sneak Peak at the Backyard

I’ve been a very bad blogger lately and I hope you all will forgive me!  On the upside we got a lot done with our outdoor space the past few weeks… but as Paula Deen would say, the proof is in the pudding y’all, so let’s get right to some pictures!

Let me just remind you what we were originally working with. Our beloved mulch patio.

Now for the afters:

All in all, we’re loving the new pea gravel addition to our patio,  it’s so much more useful and just makes the entire patio feel so much bigger.  I’m especially loving the two distinct outdoor living areas – dining & lounging!

The white chairs were a wonderful steal from a recent antiquing trip to Essex MA (more on that some other time) and I really think they are quite at home out here! I’m considering spraying them a fun color but for now I think they’ll stay white.

It’s a work in progress though…things we still want include a nice big umbrella for our patio table, a new wooden fence, and more comfortable  seating for the new fire pit area.  I better start this wish list asap!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Bulldog PSA!

So this might sound a little strange to most people…but…Bowser looves watermelon, almost as much as Mike and I love to watch him eat them! It’s pretty much guaranteed laughter for us since he’s such a clown.

I haven’t found anything to suggest that this is bad for dogs, and we make sure to buy the “personal” watermelons that seem to be seedless. I think bowser will be getting watermelon’s all summer long!

Should I go Red or Brown?

No,  I’m not talking about my hair color! I’m actually talking about mulch…..planning on doing a little landscaping and gardening clean up this weekend now that its not supposed to rain anymore (woohoo!) and I’m trying to figure out If I want to make the switch from red cedar mulch to a more calming and organic brown.

This is what our front landscaping looked like last summer when we bought our house:

I really want to work on creating a more cohesive look this spring…it’s looking a bit random if you ask me.

While I think the red  is nice, I’m kinda thinking this is a little bit too much of a good thing, especially next to our very red house. Since most of our plants are relatively young and aren’t fully grown,  we have a ton of  empty space and exposed mulch. (some of which I’m hoping to fill in with a few more plants.)  I’m thinking a more neutral and natural brown would look so much better!

Back in Action

I’ve been on an accidental blogging and home project hiatus as life took over the past several days.  I had two very close friends in town this past weekend which was such a blast, but to be quite honest I’m still recovering from all the fun, and all that pesky rain.  Luckily all that rain seems to have lead the way for some absolutely gorgeous March weather! Mid 60′s all week has me wearing my favorite flip flops and dreaming up a Spring time gardening plan for the front yard!

All I know is I’ll definitely be planting some Hydrangea bushes…. and lots of them. I want to carry around a big old galvanized tin bucket in the Summer time, glass of lemonade in tow, snipping flowers and throwing them in my bucket to bring on inside the house. But in the mean time I’ll be getting my Hydrangeas from the Florist just like everybody else!

My wonderful florist tossed in a few extra stems on the house for me the other day.I love seeing my favorite yellow pitcher all filled up.

Does anyone else remember this room from Country living about a year ago? It was a beautiful garden house surrounded by peach trees and gorgeous flowers. It was so girly and serene, and perfect!

I would die to have this little outdoor room. It seems like the perfect getaway to unwind, sip a glass of cold iced tea and read a book.

I cant wait for Spring to actually set in, lucky for us the official first day is coming right up! This Sunday, March 21st Marks the start of the new season. Hope everyone get’s to enjoy some sunshine….I think all of us here on the east coast deserve some sunny, dry weather for  change!

Being Cute isn’t Easy

Bowser had a rough day today…we had to take him to the vet to be neutered, six months old and he’s already had major surgery!  He’s home and resting now but he’s so tired and groggy. All he wants to do is sleep in his cozy bed, and I don’t blame him!

Our vet told us he should be back to his usual self with in a few days, but no doggie play dates or strenuous activity for about a week, poor little guy.  In the mean time, he’s going to get extra snuggles and kisses from his mom to make up for it!

March Showers

It feels like it’s been raining forever here in Boston add that to the fact that next month is April- the month most infamous for its rain fall – leads me to believe I should probably start building an Ark.  At the very least, this rain might be more tolerable if  I had adorable rain gear!

I wouldn’t mind the occasional rain shower if I had these J.Crew Wellies

All the stores have  Spring clothes out right now, if only mother nature would get the memo that Winter needs to be over!
